Bride and groom kissing with bridal party in kilts and mismatched dresses, Scottish Highlands wedding

A Woodland Highland Wedding in a 1930s Slip Wedding Dress

K and J were married in Grandtully, Highland Perthshire, celebrating at the village hall and among the ferns, old trees and river nearby. It was relaxed, romantic and full of the people they love.

The bride wore an original 1930s silk slip wedding dress from our antique collection. Its fluid bias cut, with a sheer net yoke and delicate hand-appliquéd florals at the neckline. The delicate pattern kept the look simple and soft. She paired it with an antique embroidered veil, its fine netting and hand-worked florals falling almost to the ground. She finished the look with a sparkling headband, ballet flats and a loose bouquet of clematis wrapped in vintage lace.

The groom and the groomsmen wore kilts. The bridesmaids wore mismatched dresses in deep reds, rich greens and lace, and carried red carnation bouquets that brought colour against the moody Highland sky.

It’s the kind of wedding we love most: personal, unfussy and timeless.

Why a vintage slip makes a beautiful wedding dress

Original 1930s slips were cut on the bias, so the silk skims the body and moves with you. They give you a simple, timeless shape that looks just as right today as it did ninety years ago.

On its own, a slip feels effortless and minimal. It’s also easy to dress up: add a long antique veil like this one, a pearl or crystal headpiece, or a lace shawl or cardigan for cooler days. Pair it with ballet flats or low heels for a relaxed ceremony, or satin heels and statement earrings for evening.

Slips are often softer on the budget than a traditional gown, and they’re also a lovely choice for elopements, city hall weddings and second outfits for the reception.
