Roxanne & Steve’s Non-Traditional Wedding in Kauai, Hawaii

Roxanne & Steve’s Non-Traditional Wedding in Kauai, Hawaii

Roxanne and Steve’s August wedding in Hawaii was never going to follow tradition.

It was relaxed, personal, and deeply rooted in who they already are as a couple - with vintage textures, secondhand details, and an easy, unforced energy running through everything. Think Vans on the ground, barefoot moments in between, and a day that felt more like an intimate gathering than a structured wedding production.

Set along the coast in Kauai, Hawaii, and held at a private villa the couple found on Vrbo, the space immediately shaped the tone of the day. It felt lived-in and low-pressure - more like a home for a few days than a formal venue - which suited them perfectly.

A Different Kind of Bridal Look

For Roxanne, vintage isn’t just an aesthetic choice - it’s how she lives.

She’s a vintage collector through and through, with around 95% of her wardrobe secondhand. The same approach extends to her home and decor, where she gravitates toward simple, classic, timeless pieces and sees sourcing them almost as a hobby in itself.

So when she started wedding dress shopping in New York, the experience felt completely disconnected. She did the appointments, tried on the dresses - and hated everything. All the dresses felt overpriced, overly polished, and strangely unspecial. Nothing felt like her.

That was the moment she knew she couldn’t force a traditional bridal experience and decided to settle on a vintage wedding dress.

She found her perfect wedding outfit in our shop by simply searching online. The piece that caught her heart was a 1930s slip gown from our store, Adored Closet. It was a simple pure silk piece with twisted straps and delicate embroidery. Slip dresses aren’t the obvious bridal choice (if anything, they’re usually reserved for getting ready), but that was exactly the point. Roxanne wanted something she could move in, and something that felt like her - not something overly styled or “done.”

The dress was then taken to an incredible vintage-only tailor in Michigan, Hook & Eye, who hand-sewed all the alterations. They also added a silk slip underneath so it wouldn’t be transparent, keeping the integrity of the original piece while making it wearable for the day.

Something Borrowed, Something Found, Something Lived-In

Roxanne got ready in a vintage silk slip set she found on Depop, keeping things relaxed and effortless from the very start. The styling details followed the same intuitive approach.

Roxanne’s veil belonged to her sister-in-law, which became her “something borrowed” without it ever being overplanned. She wore pearls that were a family heirloom from her late godmother - one of those quiet, grounding details that carries meaning without needing attention drawn to it.

Her jewellery was a mix of pieces from Kali Zoe and Found Natural Goods, layered in a way that felt personal rather than styled. Hair was done by Tyler (Tytyface) and makeup by Stefanie - both kept soft, natural, and in line with the overall aesthetic.

And instead of traditional bridal shoes, Roxanne decided to go barefoot for the whole wedding. For dancing, she wore Vans - practical, comfortable, and completely in line with the laid-back vibe.

The Setting: Relaxed & Easy

Kauai really did most of the work here. The light, the greenery, the air - it didn’t need much added to it.

The couple found the event venue on VRBO - literally by choosing "allow events" filter on, and typing in "Hawaii Backyard Wedding" as the keyword. It was simple and beautiful - exactly what it needed to be.

Vintage Details In Every Direction

What really tied everything together were the layered, collected details — the kind that don’t come from a styling checklist, but from years of gathering things slowly over time.

The table settings were made up of vintage scarves Roxanne had collected and scoured for online, layered across surfaces in place of traditional linens. On top sat strings of pearls and antique pink glass shell dishes, giving everything a soft, slightly nostalgic, intentionally unpolished feel. Nothing matched too perfectly — and that was the point.

At the heart of the ceremony was a simple, beautifully understated chuppah — light, minimal, and unoverworked — framing the moment without overpowering it. It was made out of lace from wedding dresses that once belonged to Roxanne's mom and nan. It blended seamlessly into the natural surroundings, reinforcing the feeling that nothing about the day needed to be over-styled to feel meaningful.

Even the smaller personal details echoed the same theme: collected, secondhand, meaningful.

Florals were sourced from Safeway - simple, accessible, and beautifully unfussy. Food was catered by Destination Events Hawaii, rentals came through KZietz Weddings, and the cake was made by Ko Bakery.

Steve kept things equally relaxed. His shirt was secondhand, and he wore a vintage abalone shell bolo tie - a subtle nod to island life without leaning into cliché or costume.

A Non-Traditional Wedding That Felt Completely Theirs

It wasn’t a big, formal wedding, and it wasn’t trying to be. It was small, relaxed, and definitely not following mainstream bridal trends - and that’s exactly what made it so special.

Photography by Melissa Gayle Weddings alongside Aimee Dianne Photography captured everything in a really honest way. Nothing too staged, just real moments and a really nice sense of the atmosphere.
